Company Overview
Personal Screening plc has two trading subsidiaries,
Personal Screening International Limited and Mermaid Diagnostics
Limited.
The self-test medical kits sold by Personal Screening
International Limited are in a similar format to pregnancy
kits. Personal Screening has identified a range of tests
that are likely to appeal to groups which are at a substantial
risk of contracting the relevant condition. The kits detect
conditions where early diagnosis has a significant benefit
to the user. Customers are supplied with all the items
necessary to conduct a test at home, together with appropriate
advisory and instructional material. In the event of a
positive result, the user is urged to seek a medical opinion.
Traditionally it has been the role of the GP to make a
primary diagnosis of a patient. Sometimes it is necessary
for tests to be carried out by a pathology laboratory
which are often situated in the local hospital. This process
takes time. It involves repeated visits by the patient
to the GP (and the laboratory) and there is a delay while
the laboratory processes the test. More importantly the
process usually begins after symptoms are apparent. Screening
of at risk groups can result in earlier detection of illnesses.
The tests are either conducted on finger prick blood
or urine samples.
Mermaid Diagnostics Limited was acquired in 2006. It
holds patents over a device known as Safetube®. This
is a patented technology which allows quick and easy-to-use
colorimetric and other assays to be carried out away from
the laboratory without the need for expensive instrumentation.
The device allows reactive chemicals to be isolated from
one another before the test and safely contains reagents
and sample after use, reducing the chance of operator
contamination and allowing for safe disposal.
SmokeScreen® is the first commercialised use of SafeTube®.
It is a 6-minute urine test can be used on its own to
correctly identify smokers, with a colour chart for a
semi-quantitative measure of smoking and urine can be
analysed with the new dedicated colorimeter for a quantitative
measure of nicotine intake. This instrument is sensitive
enough to detect down to passive smoking levels. The colorimetric
assay used turns a urine sample different shades of pink.
Personal Screening and its subsidiaries are registered
in England and Great Britain is the main country of operation.
